I am looking forward to the opportunity to speak at the MacDonald Museum in Middleton on Wednesday, July 19th. It will be part of the museum’s “What To Read Wednesdays” series.
Given the venue, I am hoping to talk a little about the historical background of the Cole Harbour Poor Farm. The book is set there and is forever in debt to the resources and help of the staff at the Cole Harbour Heritage Museum. Other important Nova Scotia museums important to the story were the Dartmouth Heritage Museum (for Helen Creighton’s music) and the Alexander Graham Bell Historic Site (he makes a cameo appearance!)
As you can tell, I am a big history nerd and enjoy all the museums we have available to visit in Nova Scotia, not just the ones I’ve mentioned. I hope you can join me at the MacDonald museum for an evening of discussion on the themes of the book, particularly the importance of historical monuments and museums to contemporary society.
UPDATE: I thoroughly enjoyed the event at the Museum on July 19th. It was remarkable how much everyone attending had some connection with autism and we had a far-ranging, in-depth discussion on the topic. Thanks to the generosity of the attendees, we raised $170 for Learningo (formerly PlayingAndLearningTogether). I loved my trip to Middleton and look forward to visiting this beautiful part of Nova Scotia again.
